Many years ago, I collected a lot of petrified wood from the banks of the North Saskatchewan river. The majority of this material is brownish or a golden brown colour with distinctive wood structure. One piece I found was very dark and waxy in appearance and for many years it collected dust in my workshop. A couple of days ago, I came across it and was intrigued by the unique appearance of this piece. It clearly had the structural form of petrified would, but looked more like a limb cast. The first clue I had on how different this material might be was when I put it to the trim saw. It was hard, almost like jade or a very compact chalcedony - which is exactly what it is. As well as being very hard, it is also black, pure jet black in places. Anyway, here is the first piece of this fantastic petrified wood. I have included a photo of the rough as it looks before it is cut SOLD
